TI Sparkle invests in the new international submarine cable system SEA-ME-WE 5

Participated by 15 global players, SEA-ME-WE 5 will connect Europe to Asia with a main landing in Catania, Sicily

Telecom Italia Sparkle announces it has signed all relevant contracts and is among initial investors for the implementation of the new submarine cable system connecting Europe to Singapore.

The ceremony took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 7th at the presence of all consortium members.

The new cable system is planned to reach 17 countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, UAE. Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Devised with the latest 100Gbps technology, SEA-ME-WE 5 is a multiregional superhighway that will provide lowest latency and represents an additional network layer of diversity and resilience for the heavily loaded Asia to Europe route.

With a design capacity set at 24 Terabyte per second on 3 fiber pairs deployed for a total length of 19.500km, the ready for service date is expected in the first half of 2016.

Sicily today accounts for a wide portion of all capacity landing in Europe and with the new SEA-ME-WE 5 cable landing in Catania the share of business is expected to grow, making Sicily leading cable landing hub in Europe.
